Sasolburg

The large industrial town of Sasolburg is located in the northernmost corner of the Free State province, and was established in the early 1950's to provide housing and facilities for Sasol employees. The town sits on the southern banks of the Vaal River, in the Metsimaholo municipal district, and is considered to be the chemical hub of South Africa due to its petro-chemical industry which operates non-stop.

Location

Access to Sasolburg is reached via the R59 from Vereeniging and the East Rand, and lies 150km from OR Tambo international Airport. Johannesburg is reached via an 80km drive northwards along the N1 national highway, while Bloemfontein is situated approximately 360km to the south.

Climate

Sasolburg lies at an altitude of roughly 1500 meters above sea level, and as a result the town experiences a fairly dry climate. The average annual rainfall for Sasolburg is approximately 630mm with most of it occurring during the summer months. Summer temperatures in Sasolburg often range in the mid to high twenties, while in the winter months temperatures drop to the high teens.

Though the town is largely industrial, Sasolburg has an excellent environmental awareness programme in place and is said to have more trees and shrubs than residents earning it the tile of the Garden Town of the North West free State, and making it an increasingly popular choice for first time home owners, especially families. Recent trends have seen a great demand for property in  Sasolburg among commuters who work in other regions within the Vaal Triangle, such as Vereeniging and Vanberbijl Park. The town also has a number of golf courses. The Penny Heyns Olympic Swimming Pool serves as a regular venue for water polo, diving and rescue competitionsas well as the national SASOL Winter Swimming Championships. The DP de Villiers Stadium also offers excellent facilities, and hosts the SASOL Athletics Series finals every year, while also being the home ground of the Vaal Triangle Rugby Union.

In terms of recreation, Sasolburg offers a number of attractions and activities which include  markets, theatres, an art gallery, bird sanctuary, fishing, boating and water sports at the nearby Vaal Dam, and horse racing at the Vaal race course.
