The Southern Free State town of Bethulie lies in the  Xhariep Region, a short distance from the Free State and Eastern Cape Provincial border. The small historical town was originally established by British and french missionaries during the 1820's, and later served as a trading post for the large scale cattle and sheep farming industries which developed in the area. As a result of the construction of the Bethulie and Gariep Dams, the town's economy has grown to depend largely on its agricultural sector, with activities expanding to include other commercial farming ventures such as horse, game and other farming eg alpacas and exotic ducks.

Bethulie lies in the Free State's dry and arid Xhariep region and serves as the gateway between Cape Town and Lesotho. The peaceful southern Free State town has become a well known stop over point for travelers making their way along the N1 and N6 highways. Bethulie is also centrally situated along the R701, providing easy access to Bloemfontein and the northern regions of the province.

Climate

Bethulie is located in South Africa's summer rainfall region and typically experiences semi-desert Karoo-like climate with large differences between its daytime and night temperatures. Summers in the area are typically warm with temperatures ranging from the high teens to the upper thirties, while the winter months are much cooler with temperatures between 1 and 18 degrees Celsius.

This bridge is a combined road and rail bridge, and is also the longest in the country , measuring 1,2km.
