Simon's Town is a village in Cape Town and home to South Africas naval base. It is located on the shores of False Bay, on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula. For more than two centuries it has been an important naval base and harbour (first for the Royal Navy and now the South African Navy). The town is named after Simon van der Stel, an early governor of the Cape Colony, its cobbled streets with restored cottages and homes, 21 of which are over 150 years old, are now an assortment of shops, coffee shops and restaurants. Simon's Town has a population of some 3000 people that call the village home. Situated about 40 km outside of the city, en route to the Cape Point Nature Reserve
Aside from the wonderful views from the seaside restaurants and the feeling of being right outside of any city, it is the beaches of Simon's Town that are a real draw card.
Boulders, home to an African penguin colony, is a wonderful swimming beach and very popular with families over a weekend, despite the entrance fee and the need to juggle the tides. Swimming with penguins in this calm bay never ceases to delight.
