Ceres is a town with some 46000
inhabitants in the Western Cape. It is the administrative centre of
the Witzenberg Local Municipality. The Ceres district is comprised of
3 different regions, each with its own unique charm and landscape - namely the Warm and Koue Bokkeveld, and the Ceres Karoo.
It was named
after the Roman goddess Ceres, a name which is fitting as the valley
in which the town is situated is extremely fertile and is a major
producer of South Africa's deciduous fruit. It is situated about 170
km north-east of Cape Town, which is climatically warmer than the
surrounding highlands.
Ceres experiences a typical
Mediterranean climate tempered by its altitude. The town experiences
warmer temperatures in summer, however winters are cool to quite cold
and wet, with frequent snowfalls on the surrounding higher-lying
ground.
Due to the pleasant weather in Ceres,
the area has become a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with many
interesting attractions and activities to offer, including San rock
art, 4X4 routes, hiking and mountain biking trails, horse riding,
scenic drives, farm tours, fishing, cherry picking between November
and January, abseiling, canoeing, paragliding, and game
viewing.
Ceres is well-known for fruit juices exported
worldwide bearing the town's name. It is also famous locally for
winter snow and cherries.
Residential property for sale in Ceres covers a wide variety which ranges from grand old Victorian style homes in the quiet Prince Alfred Hamlet region, to slightly smaller 2 and three bedroom homes in the winelands area. House prices in these areas vary between around R350 000 and R2 500 000. A wide variety of fruit farms and smallholdings are also on offer throughout the region.
